Back in December, responding to a post on Julian Sanchez's blog about the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (i.e. McCain-Feingold), I made this prediction:
I suspect when Democrats find their speech suppressed leading up to the 2004 election, they'll find a way to blame it on the chilling suppression of dissent in Ashcroft's America, despite the opposition of most Republicans to the law.
it is looking as if censorship may be one of the main dirty tricks the Republicans try to use during this campaign. The Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to shut down political ads such as those by MoveOn.
Democrats, you are reaping what you sowed. You wanted this law. You scoffed at the right-wing corporate whores who warned you it was a total violation of freedom of speech. McCain and Feingold agree that the 527 "loophole" violates the law, so you can't claim the Republicans are trying to "change campaign rules in midstream".
And when we get within 60 days of the election, and it's illegal for you to run ANY ad criticizing one of the worst Presidents in our country's history, you can thank Granny D, Bulworth, and everyone else who insisted that the way to make politics more inclusive was to silence campaign speech.
