Will Carroll

From Wiki Gonzalez

Will Carroll is a prominent author of Baseball Prospectus, best known for analyzing baseball injuries in his "Under the Knife" columns and for investigative reports, rather than statistical analysis, per se.

In 2003, Carroll broke into the national media with a Prospectus report claiming that Pete Rose had a signed reinstatement deal with MLB. In 2004, he wrote the first book to be released by a BPro author, "Saving The Pitcher." Mike Marshall called it "dumbed down plagiarism", but it was given positive reviews from Tom House and Peter Gammons. In 2005, he followed this up with a new book The Juice: The Real Story of Baseball's Drug Problems (http://isbn.nu/156663668X), in which he dove into the debate about performance enhancing drugs in baseball. This book was too academic to sell well, but much of the work was well done, especially chapters by Jay Jaffe and Keith Scherer, themselves also BPro authors.

In January 2006, Carroll followed up his book by starting a new blog. He intended to track a year-long project to build himself into tip-top shape without the use of illegal PEDs or illegal supplements (http://willcarroll.mlblogs.com/the_year_of_living_chemic/2006/01/part_one.html). This project ended abruptly. It was later discovered that the project had ended when Carroll began work on an ESPN TV show. David Pinto broke the story at his blog Baseball Musings that Carroll was going to work at ESPN and Primates went into a tizzy. The news that this was a football show calmed the Primates down. The show, "The Fantasy Show", was on ESPN for six weeks before being cancelled. Carroll continues to write about football for ESPN.com.

Carroll has encountered much criticism from Primates for his leaps to conclusions and arrogant writing style, but people who have met him in person say he's a nice guy. He also has a personal friendship with Jenn Sterger, according to reports linked from The Blog For The Book.

Carroll has a background in the disability insurance industry and got his start due to a long time friendship with Dr. James Andrews, a prominent surgeon. He is a fan of the Cubs, and he also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
