Lawyers
From Wiki Gonzalez
Lawyers for some reason are quite numerous on Baseball Think Factory, at least people who have gone (or are going) to law school.

[edit] Primates with law degrees
Craig Calcaterra, Shredder, David Nieporent and Buddha have law degrees. UCCF was formerly a New York City lawyer, but got deadly deadly sick of it and left the profession in 2005. DeJesusFreak and Spahn Insane are both Chicago lawyers, but are probably a bit less worn out than UCCF. Srul Itza is a lawyer in Hawaii who previously practiced in NYC. Rob Base is a lawyer in Washington, DC, as is Schilling's Sprained Ankiel. Answer Guy and Guapo are also lawyers. PhillyBooster is a Philadelphia lawyer, as is Adam B., which is not nearly as bad as it sounds -- the Tampa Bay Rays have been known to hold special games on honor of Philadelphia lawyers. (Then again, it certainly can't be very good, since it involves both being in Philadelphia and being a lawyer.) Sam M is a law professor. Traco Bucco is a JAG with the US Air Force. T.J. is a general practitioner and city councilman. Kurt has a law degree, but is not a practicing lawyer. John M. Perkins is a former lawyer from Maharishi land who is now a law school librarian. One Flap Down and Sweet are lawyers in Los Angeles. Ramblin' Gamblin' Dave is a skateboard lawyer in San Diego. Daryn is a labour lawyer in Toronto. Doris from Rego Park has a law degree and *cough cough* admission to the New York State bar is pending. CrosbyBird is working at a small law firm in downtown Manhattan. Backlasher is a lawyer.
Whew. Are there others not yet mentioned?
[edit] Primates getting law degrees
Pops Freshenmeyer, LatNam, SMK, TempleUSox, and Cabbage are law students, as is E., Hinske. RB in Fill-in-the-Place aspires to a career in law (if being a GM doesn't work out) and hasn't had this dream crushed by the Primate lawyers. (Yet.) Black and Teal at last report had begun law school in the fall semester of '05. AGodnamedpablo is about to earn his law degree from a middling second tier law school and is relieved to discover he has precisely zero interest in practicing. Or working for that matter.
Smiling Joe Hesketh is a law librarian for a university law school.
[edit] Primates and the law
Having deep knowledge of the American legal system helps not only with understanding many baseball topics (labor strife, arbitration, stadium deal lawsuits, ballplayer and fan arrests) but also with delivering semi-reliable but completely non-binding legal advice to readers of the Primer Lounge. (See Important Disclaimer below for more on this.)
In June 2005, the amount of legal talk in the regular Lounge became so enormous, Chris Dial initiated Judge Landis's Chambers, a periodic discussion thread to let interested Primates discuss law and (ideally) how it applies to baseball.
Los Angeles Waterloo of Black Hawk, though not a lawyer, is employed by a law firm. He has also availed himself of the legal system several times, most notably by testifying against some people that robbed him at knife-point and by being pepper-sprayed by law enforcement officers. (The two incidents were not related.)
[edit] Important Disclaimer
Having a law degree is not a pre-requisite for rendering legal advice (or really any advice), nor does having a law degree in any way make such advice reliable. Furthermore, visitors to BBTF (both lawyers and non-lawyers) should recognize that the lawyers here are only licensed to practice in certain jurisdictions.
BBTF is an international forum, and the last thing anyone wants is for one of the lawyers to render legal advice to someone from a jurisdiction in which they are not licensed to practice, based on a misunderstanding of that jurisdiction's laws or the partial facts that are disclosed on BBTF posts.
Rendering advice outside one's jurisdiction is not only something that can bring trouble to the lawyers here, but more importantly, may be the wrong advice for a particular circumstance and may lead to dire results.
Most of us are willing to give our two cents on occasion, but everyone should realize that those are worth simply two cents, not more, and are not intended to constitute legal advice or representation.
Of course, the fact that this disclaimer is located so far away from the site on which the advice is generally given strips it of much of its utility. Lord Denning would have a field day if anyone pointed to this disclaimer to argue that the recipient of such advice should not have construed it as legal advice. Of course, he's been off the bench for 20 odd years and he's dead, but still.
Although side effects from legal advice received from the Internet are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- headache
- diarrhea
- constipation
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- erections lasting 4 or more hours
- stomach pain
- cough
- cold symptoms
- dizziness
- rash
