John Hart

Need a good prospect or two?
Want to get rid of a crappy, overpaid veteran?
Call John Hart. He'll hook you up.
(To be fair, Hart has a pretty good track record in both Cleveland and Texas of building teams out of his own prospects and making sure they're signed for reasonable durations. The above rant is based largely on the inscrutable signings made by the 2001 Rangers, who splurged on Ruben Sierra, Andres Galarraga, Randy Velarde, and the late Ken Caminiti while giving up on the likes of Carlos Peña. Hart has indeed populated the majors with castoff pitching prospects over the years, but which GM hasn't, really.)
(Actually, I'm the guy who wrote it, and I was thinking more of moves like Giles for Rincon, Kent/Tavarez/Vizcaino for Matt Williams, Jose Hernandez for Heathcliff Slocumb, Steve Kline for Jeff Juden, and Sexson/Scutaro for Wickman/Bere/Woodard. And, for what it's worth, I dispute that the '90s Indians were built out of Hart's prospects. Thome, Belle, Baerga, and Nagy were all in the organization when Hart took over.)
