Dan Werr's Top 10 Natural Sights
From Wiki Gonzalez
1. Valleys of Glacier National Park, Montana
Sort of broad, but pick any point near the top of Going to the Sun Road, and look across the valley at any cliff face, and it will suffice. Doesn't photograph very well, because scale is the point.
2. Maligne Canyon, Jasper National Park, Alberta
When they first discovered the Grand Canyon, they said, "What magnificent glory! This is truly one of the most spectacular creations God has seen fit to bestow upon the Earth." When they first discovered Maligne Canyon, they said "Hey, where's Bob?"
3. Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California
Sheer cliff faces, and some of the highest waterfalls in North America. Plus a hell of a lot of crowds, of course.
4. Mesa Arch, Canyonlands National Park, Utah
This arch sits directly above a steep cliff face, facing a panoramic view of otherworldly rock formations and the Colorado River Valley.
5. Bryce Amphitheater, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
A valley filled with hoodoos, pinnacle rock formations, which are amazing when viewed from above or within, where they often define the steep walls of extremely narrow canyons.
6. Columbia Icefield, Jasper and Banff National Parks, Alberta
The Columbia Icefield sits high in the Rockies and numerous glaciers extend down like fingers through the valleys, including the Athabasca Glacier, which can be walked out on easily, and the Saskatchewan Glacier, show below, visible from the top of Parker Ridge in its spectacular setting (note the trees on Parker Ridge for some sense of scale).
7. Arches, Arches National Park, Utah
All of the rock formations at Arches National Park are mind-blowing, but of course, the arches take top billing. My personal favorite is Double Arch.
8. Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
North America's tallest dunes lay strikingly at the feet of the Sangre de Cristo, the Blood of Christ Mountains of... er, Colorado.
9. Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia
Not really mountains but a deeply carved plateau, the Blue Mountains features rock formations towering over a stunningly vast forest of eucalyptus trees, which release the oil that gives the forest its bluish hue and thus the name.
10. Crater Lake, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
This is the National Park that most exceeded my expectations, a vivid blue lake in a caldera on a snow-rimmed mountaintop, like God's toilet, full of 2000 flushes blue. I should find a picture from the summer, because this winter picture doesn't do it justice, and also because I had to steal this photo from my girlfriend.
