[edit] Profile
Like other ESPN.com talent, Olney's main job is writing and blogging for the site, but he is often pulled onto Baseball Tonight, SportsCenter and other ESPN platforms to analyze breaking baseball news.
Olney used to work at the New York Times as the Yankees beat writer before going to Bristol in the early 2000s to seek fame and fortune.
[edit] Buster on BBTF
On Baseball Think Factory, Olney is renowned for two inventions:
- Productive Out Percentage. In mid-2004, he cited the Yankees' excellence in this stat and the Red Sox' comparative weakness as evidence that Boston was not going to go far in the postseason, where productive outs matter so much more.
- The "Wrong hole, Buster" running gag, originally described in the Primer Lounge by RCheli as early as December 20, 2004. It is used both as an alternate handle for Olney and as an allusion to his unreliable baseball commentary.

- I've told this story before on this site, but I'll repeat it (it's one of my favorites).
- I once had a roommate who could charm any woman for 30 minutes. After a half-hour, though, they would quickly realize he was an ass, and run away as fast as they could. If they were drunk, however, it would often take them up to 2 hours to realize this. Because of this, he was often successful in bringing women back to the apartment for a little "after dinner drink" (if you know what I'm saying).
- Well, one night, he brings this really cute girl back to the apartment. My other roommate and I were in the living room watching TV, and Jim (the sauve gentleman) leads the girl to his bedroom, which is right next to the living room.
- After about 5 minutes, we hear the girl scream out, "Wrong hole, buster." A minute later, she's running out the door.
- A couple of minutes pass (and my roommate and I calm down our laughter), and Jim saunters out to the living room and says, "She digs me, man."
- So, every time I see his name in print, I always think, "Wrong hole, Buster."
