Milwaukee Brewers
(Redirected from Brewers)
There was a Western League Milwaukee Brewers team in the 1880s and 90s which became one of the original American League teams in 1901. By 1902 this club had moved to St. Louis and become the Browns. The American Association moved into Milwaukee with a new Brewers club that flourished until the Braves hit town in 1953 (though sources seem to indicate (http://www.ballparkwatch.com/leagues/american_association.htm) that the minor-league Brewers and major-league Braves coexisted for two years, 1953-54).
When the Seattle Pilots went belly-up after the 1969 season, they were transplanted to Milwaukee and became the new AL Brewers. (They moved to the National League in 1998.) The move from Seattle to Milwaukee marked the beginning of a very dark period in baseball indeed, commonly known as the Bud Selig Era, though some contend that the era did not begin until Selig surged to power years later as the baseball commissioner.
Winners of just one pennant (AL, 1982), the Brewers are among the least successful of all current major-league franchises. They have not even been in a playoff series since 1982, a record of futility exceeded only by the Expos. Under new ownership and led by a respected general manager (Doug Melvin), the team finished at 81-81 (.500) in 2005 for the first time in a long time, which bodes well for their future.
